Tadoba National Park

Maharashtra

Tadoba national park, Maharashtra’s oldest protected forest, is a charming tiny rainforest with gorgeous mountainous terrains on its north and west sides and the clean, permanent Todoba Lake in the centre. Tiger numbers and sightings have recently skyrocketed, and Tadoba National Park has established itself as one of the most important names on the tiger circuit. Tadoba National Park is primarily a dry deciduous forest with teak and bamboo trees, as well as meadows and mixed dry woods.

About Tadoba National Park

Tadoba national park is the oldest protected forest in Maharashtra, and it is a charming tiny rainforest that features picturesque mountainous terrains on its north and west sides as well as the pristine, perennial Todoba Lake in the middle. In recent years, both the number of tigers and the number of times they were spotted skyrocketed, and Tadoba National Park quickly rose to become one of the most well-known destinations on the tiger circuit. The majority of the trees in Tadoba National Park are teak and bamboo, and the park also contains some grasslands and mixed dry woods. Tadoba national park is a dry deciduous forest.
Because of this type of vegetation, the visibility throughout the forest is significantly improved, making it possible to see more game, particularly in the months when the weather is dry. During the summer months, certain man-made water holes in this parched terrain serve as a magnet for the local wildlife population. The overall land area of the reserve is around 625 square kilometres, with the national park accounting for approximately 116 square kilometres of that total. This is sufficient to view a significant portion of the fascinating fauna that resides in the region. This region is home to between sixty and seventy tigers. Kolsa, Mohuli, and Tadoba are the names of the three distinct areas that make up the national park’s tourism zone.

Wildlife in Tadoba National Park

The Tadoba National Park is home to a diverse array of wild animals, birds, and reptiles, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, and sambars, amongst many other species of wild animals, birds, and reptiles. The reserve is also home to interesting wildlife sightings. The tiger is the most popular animal at this park, and visitors have a chance to spot one in the thick of the forest or beside the lake on occasion. It is one of the most well-known tiger reserves in India and is renowned for having some of the best opportunities to see tigers. In addition to tigers, the Tadoba National Park is home to a diverse array of other wild creatures; the following information will familiarise you with the local flora and fauna of the Tadoba National Park.

Mammals

Tadoba National Park is located in Chandrapur, Maharashtra. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is the second reserve linked with India’s “Project Tiger” conservation effort, commissioned in 1994-1995. The reserve includes Tadoba national park and Andheri wildlife sanctuary. 577.96 sq km of protected and reserved woodland. The reserve is named after the god Tadoba or Taru, who was worshipped by Gond tribes in Tadoba and Andheri. Andhari is a forest river.

Tadoba National Park is surrounded by dry tropical woods, hills, and Swampland. Leopards, sloth bears, reptiles, hyenas, and birds live in Tadoba Andhari reserve. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) is the excellent wildlife site for Tiger sightings. Our Tadoba lodge lies on the edge of Tadoba’s Zari gate, a tranquil, serene, and undisturbed portion of the national park where tiger sightings are more likely.

Birds

Because the River Andhari flows through the middle of Tadoba National Park, the park is home to a plethora of different species of raptors and water birds. The tadoba national park is home to roughly 195 different kinds of birds, three of which are considered to be endangered. These species include the grey-headed fish eagle, the crested serpent eagle, and the changeable hawk-eagle. The Tadoba is one of the best places to go bird watching in Maharashtra since it has areas of deep forest, bamboo zones, grasslands, and wetlands, all of which are suitable habitats for forest birds as well as wetland birds.

The following are some of the interesting species of birds that can be found in the reserve: the Orange-headed Thrush, the Indian Pitta, the Crested Treeswift, the Stone Curlew, the Crested Honey Buzzard, the Paradise Flycatcher, the Bronze-winged Jacana, the Lesser Goldenbacked Woodpecker, the Warblers, the Black-naped Blue Flycatcher, the Oriental Honey Buzzard, the White-eyed Buzzard, the Paria The Open-Billed Stork, the Black Ibis, the Bar-Headed Goose, the Black Stroke, the Lesser Adjutant Stroke, the Brahminy Duck, the Comb Duck, the Little Grebe, and the Open-Billed Stork. House Sparrow, Indian Robbin, Indian Roller, Ruby Throat, Blue Throat, Black Redstart, Grey Tit, Common Stonechat, Brahminy Myna, Asian Pied Starling, House Crow, Large-billed Crow, and Purple Heron. Grey Heron, Large Egret, Median Egret, Indian Shag, Purple Heron. Banded Bay Cuckoo. White-breasted Water Hen. Green Sandpiper. Wood Sandpiper.

Reptiles

Crocodiles and other reptiles, like alligators, are drawn to watering holes. In addition, it is the habitat of the common Indian monitor, the Indian star tortoise, the Russel’s viper, the Indian python, the terrapin, the Indian cobra, the krait, the tree snake, the leaf-nosed snake, and many other species of reptiles and amphibians. Because there aren’t very many reptiles in this area, it shouldn’t be too difficult to stumble into one.

Nature Safari India organized our private 2 Weeks Safari in Central India plus a couple of Sightseeing and we are very happy to having choose this agency. I found them on the responsible tiger tourism association (TOFTigers) and I liked them from the very first contact. From the first email more than two years ago to the end of our trip in April 2022, the service was great, the selection of the itinerary, Parks, lodges and guides was perfect. And this although the very difficult travel situation due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our trip had to be postponed and rescheduled twice (we were supposed to travel at the end of March 2020), Mr. Deepkul was always very professional, competent, responsive and helpful with all my requests and he went the extra mile. We had a wonderful time in India, we saw a lot of tigers and wildlife, and we hope to come back soon. We warmly recommend Nature Safari India to everyone and in the future, we’ll surely book another tour with them.

We did 5 days of safaris with Sharad Vats's team, in Kanga and Pench, in April 2022. Right from the planning to the actual execution, Sharad was accessible, knowledgeable and helpful, to ensure we got a good experience. Not only was the itinerary planned and tweaked multiple times to suit us, but our accommodation and food needs were also taken care of well. We enjoyed the trip immensely, especially because Sharas understood that we were not just after tiger sightings, but enjoyed birds and trees and other wildlife too, and recommended an itinerary accordingly. The accommodation and food was great. And my particular need of a wifi connection even in these remote areas (because there was a study commitment I could not miss) was also met. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing and totally unforgettable trip to India organised by Nature Safari India, in particular Deepkul (and previously Manjeet). I organised the trip 2 years ago just as the pandemic hit, I had been communicating with Nature Safari India constantly for quite a few months until we finalised on an itinerary, nothing was too much trouble and replies to queries were almost instant. When it came to the actual holiday, all we had to do was get to New Delhi. (As a warning it isn't straightforward to get visas anymore) From then on all was taken care of. We were met at the airport and were looked after from that point, including checking us into the hotel and providing a car and driver for our exclusive use until we left New Delhi. We were driven from each location by drivers who looked after us incredibly well, stopped/slowed down if we wanted to take pictures, they also pointed out interesting sites as we passed. If you have time, I would recommend travelling by car to different locations, as you see a lot more of India. Deepkul monitored us through our whole holiday, checking that we were OK, getting reports from each of our guides and making sure we were happy with our holiday. Our guides and drivers, throughout, were fantastic, so friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and polite.
