Snow Leopard Expedition with Leh Tour

5/5

11 Nights/12 Days

The name conveys all that is wild, enigmatic, and elusive in nature since this animal is veiled in the high drama of the harsh and spectacular environment it occupies. These stone-hard mountain folk contrast nicely with their sweet, cheery Buddhism. You can tour monasteries and communities.

Tour of Snow Leopard Expedition with Leh

The very word suggests all that is wild, enigmatic, and elusive in nature, for this animal is wrapped not only in the delicate beauty of its own coat, but also in the high drama of the harsh and spectacular habitat it occupies. The contrast between these stone-hard mountain folk and the peaceful and joyful Buddhism they practise is appealing. You will have the opportunity to explore their magnificent monasteries and charming villages.

Visitors are awestruck by the landscape, which consists of steep, rugged mountains painted in pastel hues that descend to emerald fields of barley, apple and apricot orchards, and water meadows beneath azure skies. Every bend in the road and every bend in the hiking trail reveals breathtaking views of mountain and valley; of crags clogged with wild rose and clear streams fringed with willows. The high plains of the Changthang are home to herds of wild asses, antelope, and even wild yaks, while wolves and snow leopards inhabit the Tso Kar and Tso Moriri, as well as the high altitude passes of Khardung la and Taglang La.

This diversity of habitat supports a proportional variety of birds and mammals. Ladakh maintains a remnant of a world in which every region was previously unique and distinct, despite the world becoming increasingly generic and homogenous.

Nature Safari India organized our private 2 Weeks Safari in Central India plus a couple of Sightseeing and we are very happy to having choose this agency. I found them on the responsible tiger tourism association (TOFTigers) and I liked them from the very first contact. From the first email more than two years ago to the end of our trip in April 2022, the service was great, the selection of the itinerary, Parks, lodges and guides was perfect. And this although the very difficult travel situation due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our trip had to be postponed and rescheduled twice (we were supposed to travel at the end of March 2020), Mr. Deepkul was always very professional, competent, responsive and helpful with all my requests and he went the extra mile. We had a wonderful time in India, we saw a lot of tigers and wildlife, and we hope to come back soon. We warmly recommend Nature Safari India to everyone and in the future, we’ll surely book another tour with them.

We did 5 days of safaris with Sharad Vats's team, in Kanga and Pench, in April 2022. Right from the planning to the actual execution, Sharad was accessible, knowledgeable and helpful, to ensure we got a good experience. Not only was the itinerary planned and tweaked multiple times to suit us, but our accommodation and food needs were also taken care of well. We enjoyed the trip immensely, especially because Sharas understood that we were not just after tiger sightings, but enjoyed birds and trees and other wildlife too, and recommended an itinerary accordingly. The accommodation and food was great. And my particular need of a wifi connection even in these remote areas (because there was a study commitment I could not miss) was also met. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing and totally unforgettable trip to India organised by Nature Safari India, in particular Deepkul (and previously Manjeet). I organised the trip 2 years ago just as the pandemic hit, I had been communicating with Nature Safari India constantly for quite a few months until we finalised on an itinerary, nothing was too much trouble and replies to queries were almost instant. When it came to the actual holiday, all we had to do was get to New Delhi. (As a warning it isn't straightforward to get visas anymore) From then on all was taken care of. We were met at the airport and were looked after from that point, including checking us into the hotel and providing a car and driver for our exclusive use until we left New Delhi. We were driven from each location by drivers who looked after us incredibly well, stopped/slowed down if we wanted to take pictures, they also pointed out interesting sites as we passed. If you have time, I would recommend travelling by car to different locations, as you see a lot more of India. Deepkul monitored us through our whole holiday, checking that we were OK, getting reports from each of our guides and making sure we were happy with our holiday. Our guides and drivers, throughout, were fantastic, so friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and polite.

Detailed Itinerary: SNOW LEOPARD TOUR IN LEH

Day 01 : Arrival in New Delhi

Our agent will meet you at the New Delhi airport, transfer you to your hotel, assist you with the check-in process, and give over any travel-related paperwork as he briefs you on your next tour. Stay the night at the hotel in New Delhi.

The Roseate House, Aerocity or similar accommodations

Day 2 : New Delhi-Leh (Flight)

If conditions are favourable, this is one of the best flights in India. As the plane flies past Manali on the left side of the glass, snow-covered peaks protrude into the sky. This continues till the Leh airport is reached. Four peaks surround an airport that is not among the easiest to land at. Before landing, however, the professional pilots provide a 360-degree glimpse of this secret paradise.

The elevation of Leh is 3,500 metres. Acclimatization is necessary for you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, therefore we will take it easy at first, spending two full days in the vicinity of Leh so that you can acclimate to the altitude. We will therefore spend the remainder of today relaxing in our hotel.

The Grand Dragon Hotel provides lodging.

Day 3 : Leh Sightseeing

Morning of Relaxation. A religious visit of Shey, Thikey. Overnight in Hotel.

Leh sightseeing; cultural excursions to Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis. The entire day will be spent acclimatising to the altitude and touring the surrounding area. Today, we will visit Shey, which was originally the royal family’s residence. This monastery is renowned for its tall, gilded Buddha statue. One of the finest specimens of Ladakhi architecture, Thiksey, is magnificently situated twelve kilometres from Leh. This is one of the largest and most impressive Gompas in the region, and it contains numerous temples with figures, stupas, and exquisite wall paintings. In its chambers, the monastery of Thiksey houses an amazing collection of paintings. The roof offers spectacular views of the valleys. Built in the 1630s, Hemis Gompa is one of the wealthiest, largest, and most renowned Ladakhi Gompas.

Day 4 : Leh - Zingchen - Husing (Drive for 2 hours, trek for 2.5 hours)

Drive from Leh (3,500 m) to Zingchen (3,600 m) to Husing (3,800 m): It takes around 2 hours to drive from Leh to Zingchen. From Zingchen to Husing is around 2.1/2 hours of hiking. Camping overnight in tents

Husing is the focal point of three valleys renowned for Snow Leopard sightings, and is also known as the “world capital of Snow Leopard.” The Husing campsite will serve as our base camp for the next five days while we explore the several side-valleys that emanate from the Husing pasture.

Snow Leopard Lodge is the lodging.

Day 5 - 9 : Snow Leopard Excursions

Today, a local expert will take you on an early-morning excursion to the trails frequented by the elusive Snow leopard and teach you how to interpret the animal’s tracks using local art and techniques, such as smelling rock sand (the smell of the leopard’s urine), reading pug marks, scrapes, stools, and rock-face rubbings.

The expert will also impart local traditional knowledge on how to recognise the snow leopard’s hunting routines and kill sites. Camping overnight in tents

Several prime examples are shown below:

(a) The alarm calls of deer, blue sheep, and barals.

(b) The golden eagle hovering over kill sites.

(c) Excited magpie screams indicating kills.

(d) Nervous movement of the red fox close to the death site.

Identify “hot spots” (machans) vantage positions through mapping and tracking; additionally, tactics for gaining the trust of the people so that they will report any signs or actual sightings of the snow leopard immediately.

We travel along the snow leopard mapping grid and keep our ears and eyes open; we work within the neighbouring valleys in the nearby bye-valleys of the main Ranjon valley behind Husing and Rumbak.

The other two valleys where snow leopard sightings are common are Tarbung and Kharlung, where we will make day trips to investigate their habitats and pathways.

Snow Leopard Lodge is the lodging.

Day 10 : Rumbak Doh - Zinchen (Walk) - Leh

Walk from Rumbak Doh to Zinchen where the vehicles are waiting to take you back to Leh city. Overnight  at  Hotel in Leh.

Day 11 : Leh-New Delhi (Flight)

You will be taken to the Leh airport this morning in time for your departure to New Delhi. On arrival in Delhi, you will be greeted by our agent and transferred to your hotel for the night.

Day 12 : New Delhi - Onward Destination

Checkout and morning transfer to the airport where you board your flight home or to an onward destination
